5. Public House Ownership

The leading article argues that Georges did not fully utilise the value of their public house estate in their post-war operations, and that this was one reason for their eventual acquisition by Courage Barclay & Simonds Ltd. After the takeover of Bristol United Breweries in 1956 Georges had about 1,300 houses in Bristol and the surrounding area &endash; there is no evidence to suggest that these properties had ever been professionally valued, and instead Georges relied on what accountants call historic cost accumulation, i.e. value was added or subtracted occasionally usually after quite minor refurbishments. Below are illustrated examples of ten Georges' public houses showing firstly their book value at September 1960, and then their valuation in March 1961 after chartered surveyors S & G Motion had presented their report.
