Over the past three decades, historians have conducted research into a wide range of leisure forms and pursuits, yet until recently 'leisure' as a field of historical enquiry remained ungendered. This conference attempts to fill this gap in the historiography by bringing together established scholars, Phd students and independent researchers who adopt a gender focus in their (historical) studies on leisure.
Keynote speakers are Clare Langhamer (University of Sussex) who gives a paper that sets out the framework for the conference and Penny Tinkler (University of Manchester) who explores the gendered dimension of smoking in interwar Britain.
The conference includes among others papers on male leisure activities in the Middle Ages, dance halls in interwar Britain, and the male gaze of the camera obscura.
